Photovoltaic
Photovoltaic is often abbreviated to PV, so a solar photovoltaic panel is referred to as solar PV panel. In fact currently all solar panels are photovoltaic in the sense that they contain photovoltaic material.
The panels consist of photovoltaic cells that work by converting sunlight (solar radiation) directly into electricity using semiconductors that exhibit the photovoltaic effect.
One of the reason why you are reading about 'photovoltaic' panels, is that this technology works on cloudy days and does not 24/7 require direct sunlight. Technologically speaking this is a huge breakthrough for countries with climates similar to ours.
Another reason why PV is popular is because the technology is scalable and robust. PV cells have a working life of over 40 years. This is why manufacturers offer a 25 year guarantee. PV is scalable and cells (panels) can be grouped into Solar PV systems and installed directly onto your roof and then connected to your existing power supply.
This electricity is fed straight into the power supply of your home. Any excess is then automatically exported and sold on, see feed in tariff
- Apollo Solar can fit and install PV solar panels. We also offer a wider range of PV panels than other solar companies. We are the main UK importer of Siliken photovoltaic solar modules. See also Information on REC Photovoltaic Solar Modules and Siliken Photovoltaic Solar Modules
